This project was born from my upbringing in a rural lakeside town in Maine, nestled among forests, mountains, and lakes, where loons are a prominent emblem. Life moves to its own tempo “out there” in my hometown. You find yourself entwined with nature’s rhythms, leaving you no choice but to surrender and be enamored with life’s simplicities. The urgency of “the outside” world falls away.

Loons glide effortlessly through the water, but move awkwardly on land. They remind me that there’s a setting where each of us can move like we’re meant to. Loons are a symbol of tranquility, intuition, and the wildness within us. Loon Lake is a resting spot where you can just be, and that is enough.

I didn’t realize how rare this cadence of life was — or how deeply it had soaked into me — or how many moons later I’d want to package up that feeling of peace and send it miles away to friends and strangers. This is my way of sharing small moments that gave me pause.
